Universal Serial Bus port (USB)
- A type of port designed to make installation and configuration of I/O devices easy, providing room for as many as 127 devices daisy-chained together.
- An external peripheral interface standard for communication between a computer and external peripherals over a cable using bi-serial transmission.
- A port on a computer that allows external devices to be connected simply and easily. USB is a relatively new standard for peripheral connection, however the benefits of simple installation and high-speed data transfer make it an attractive option. All new home computers now come with USB ports built in.

NT File System(NTFS)
- The file system for the Windows NT/2000/XP Operating System. NTFS cannot be accessed by other Operating Systems such as DOS. It provides increase reliability and security in comparison to other methods of organizing and accessing files. There are several versions of NTFS that might or might not be compatible.
- The disk file structure used by Window NT and Windows 2000, which has a Master File Table instead of a FAT.
- An advanced file system designed for use specifically within the Windows NT operating system. It supports file system recovery, extremely large storage media, long filenames, and various features for the POSIX subsystem. It also supports object-oriented applications by treating all files as objects with user-defined and system-defined attributes.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol):
- The protocol used to transfer files over a TCP/IP network such that the file does not need to be converted to ASCII format before transferring it.
- A way of transferring files between computers. A protocol that describes file transfers between a host and a remote computer.
- A very common method of moving files between two Internet sites. FTP is a special way to login to another Internet site for the purposes of retrieving and/or sending files. There are many Internet sites that have established publicly accessible repositories of material that can be obtained using FTP, by logging in using the account name anonymous, thus these sites are called anonymous ftp servers.

Domain Name
- A unique text-based name that identifies a network.
- A domain name is the text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet. A domain name must be unique. Internet users access your website using your domain name. download The process of copying files, information and images from the Internet to your computer. Every time a visitor accesses a page on the Internet, they are downloading the contents of that page
- A name that is typically the first part of a URL and identifies the Web site. Example: www.yahoo.com. Domain names are used to make sites easier to remember.
- The text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet.

Cache
* A memory area where frequently accessed data can be stored for rapid access.
* A fast storage buffer in the central processing unit of a computer. Also called cache memory.
* Caching is a technology based on the memory subsystem of your computer. The main purpose of a cache is to accelerate your computer while keeping the price of the computer low. Caching allows you to do your computer tasks more rapidly.
Important facts about caching:
* Cache technology is the use of a faster but smaller memory type to accelerate a slower but larger memory type.
* When using a cache, you must check the cache to see if an item is in there. If it is there, it’s called a cache hit. If not, it is called a cache miss and the computer must wait for a round trip from the larger, slower memory area.
* A cache has some maximum size that is much smaller than the larger storage area.

Operating System (OS) - Software that controls a computer. An OS controls how system resources are used and provides a user interface, a way of managing hardware and software and ways to work with files.
The software that the rest of the software depends on to make the computer functional. On most PCs this is Windows or the Macintosh OS. Unix and Linux are other operating systems often found in scientific and technical environments.
The operating system controls every task your computer carries out and manages system resources to optimize performance.
Examples of OS are:
*Basic example is the windows that you are using, be it Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP., they are different versions of the OS “Windows”.
*Another example can be the Mac OS, or the Linux, etc.

Modem[MOdulate/DEModulate] - A device that modulates digital data from a computer to an analog format that can be sent over telephone lines then demodulates it back into digital format.
A device that allows two computers to communicate over telephone lines. It converts digital computer signals into analog format for transmission. A similar device at the other end converts the analog signal back into a digital format that the computer can understand. The name is an abbreviated for “modulator-demodulator.” Modem - short for “modulator/demodulator.” This device connects the computer to a telephone line for communication with another remote computer or information network.

* Hardware or software that protects a computer or network from unauthorized access.
* A firewall is either the program or the computer it runs on, usually an Internet gateway server, that protects the resources of one network from users from other networks. Typically, an enterprise with an intranet that allows its workers access to the wider Internet will want a firewall to prevent outsiders from accessing its own private data resources.

* A firewall is a hardware or software solution to enforce security policies. In the physical security analogy, a firewall is equivalent to a door lock on a perimeter door or on a door to a room inside of the building - it permits only authorized users such as those with a key or access card to enter. A firewall has built-in filters that can disallow unauthorized or potentially dangerous material from entering the system. It also logs attempted intrusions.
